Forestry and Landscape Nurseries in South Carolina

Insects, diseases and physiological problems affect trees grown in Landscape or Forestry nurseries. Since such trees are grown primarily for resale, it is important for them to be the highest quality possible. If present in the nursery, noxious insects and diseases could potentially be moved to the out-planting site where they could start new pest infestations. In these situations, there are opportunities for insect and disease control that would not be cost-effective elsewhere. With our extensive experience in tree pathology, entomology, physiology and pesticide application we have likely seen your problem before. We can provide on-site evaluations of any tree species in nurseries and make recommendations for pest control.

Christmas Tree Plantations

South Carolina has many Christmas Tree Plantations. The species grown locally are different from those grown in more northern areas. Leyland and Arizona Cypress cultivars and Virginia and White Pines are our major species. Christmas Trees are different from other trees since aesthetic considerations play a huge part in their sale. Many insects or pathogens that would be considered minor pests in other places can profoundly affect tree sale. For instance, needlecast diseases cause premature defoliation, but pose little threat to the health of the infected tree. However, brown Christmas Trees are difficult to market. Some pests, such as aphids, can be moved from the plantation to a home. Once in a warm environment, they will become active and cause consternation to the affected homeowner. An unhappy customer is unlikely to be a repeat customer. We can provide diagnostics and evaluations for pests on all species of Christmas Trees in South Carolina.

Pests of Wood in Use

Trees provide aesthetic qualities in South Carolina’s yards and woodlands and are also the source of lumber and many other forest products. Wood in use may be attacked by many insect and disease pests. With our background in entomology, pathology and pesticide use, we can inspect and diagnose any pest problems in processed wood, including that in houses or other structures.

Old House Borers, Powder Post Beetles and other insects can attack the lumber used in buildings and cause severe degrade if not controlled. Log homes are especially prone to insect attack. Many species of termites attack sawn boards and other wood used in houses. They can silently destroy or undermine the wood in a home yet remain unnoticed by the homeowner until the wood begins to fail. The Formosan termite is established along the South Carolina coast and it exceptionally destructive to buildings and trees.

Disease pests can also destroy finished wood and foundation timbers. Meruliporia incrassata (formerly Poria incrassata) is a fungus that can literally rot away any wood used in construction. It transmits water from the ground to structural wood and then causes wood decay. This is a rare occurrence, but an infection may not be noticed until someone falls through the floor. Other fungi can destroy wood, especially in the presence of excess moisture.

Most insurance policies do not cover losses to structural wood infested by insect or disease pests. Throughout South Carolina, we can provide early diagnosis of any pests of wood in use and make recommendations for their control.

Seed Orchards and Cutting Banks

Seed Orchards produce seed for planting in forest or landscape nurseries. Often the goal is to improve species genetics for future growth, form or other attributes. The pests that attack seeds and cones are rarely a problem in other trees. We can provide insect trapping, monitoring and diagnosis of other problems to reduce losses in seed yield.

Cutting banks are plantations that are periodically pruned to provide cuttings for rooting or grafting. These areas are prone to several serious diseases that could be moved from the banked trees to their vegetatively propagated offspring. We can analyze these plantations for pests and make recommendations to minimize disease spread.
